A new law being considered by lawmakers in New York City would strip landlords of the ability to perform criminal background checks on prospective tenants.
Some have criticized the bill for not allowing landlords to conduct criminal background checks on potential tenants.

A new bill introduced in August by Councilman Keith Powers is gaining support from newly elected pols and appears likely to be signed into law by Mayor Eric Adams. Powers said he wants people to feel safe where they live, but also wants to give rehabilitated people an opportunity to stabilize their lives.

The Rent Stabilization Association, which represents 25,000 landlords, is getting a lot of pushback from tenants who don’t want to share buildings with violent ex-cons.
