What an Arizona Statewide Criminal Background Check Includes

An Arizona statewide criminal background check shows criminal cases filed in Arizona courts. That includes felony and misdemeanor cases from superior, justice, and municipal courts.

In addition, each record lists every charge with its Arizona Revised Statutes code and class. It also shows the disposition charge, the disposition date, case events, and court documents.

Because of that detail, you can see exactly how each count ended. For example, a report separates dismissed counts from counts that led to a guilty plea.

Where Arizona Criminal Records Come From

Arizona keeps criminal records in two main places. First, the Department of Public Safety runs the Central State Repository under A.R.S. § 41-1750.

However, DPS does not run criminal history checks for private employers or employment purposes. Instead, it limits fingerprint checks to qualifying agencies and clearance card programs.

Second, the Arizona Supreme Court’s Administrative Office of the Courts shares court case data. Its Public Access to Court Information service covers 177 of 184 Arizona courts. Therefore, court records give employers the most practical statewide view.

Arizona Background Check Compliance

Arizona has no state lookback limit for background reports. Therefore, the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act sets the reporting rules.

Under the FCRA, non-conviction records older than seven years cannot appear on most reports. However, convictions have no time limit.

Also, Arizona now lets courts seal records. Under A.R.S. § 13-911, applicants may deny sealed arrests and convictions on most job applications.

Meanwhile, a set-aside conviction under A.R.S. § 13-905 stays on the record with a note. For every statute and agency, read our Arizona background check laws guide.

Arizona Statewide Criminal Background Check: FAQs

Quick answers about searching Arizona criminal records for employment and tenant screening.

Does Arizona have a statewide criminal records search?

Yes. The Arizona Supreme Court’s Administrative Office of the Courts shares case data from 177 of 184 Arizona courts. So, one Arizona criminal records search covers courts statewide.

Can private employers get criminal history from Arizona DPS?

No. Under A.R.S. § 41-1750, DPS does not run criminal history checks for private employers. Instead, employers use court record searches through a consumer reporting agency.

However, some school, child care, and health care jobs require a DPS fingerprint clearance card.

What does an Arizona statewide criminal background check include?

It includes felony and misdemeanor cases from Arizona courts. Each record lists the charges, A.R.S. codes, and class.

In addition, it shows dispositions, case events, and court documents when available.

How long does an Arizona criminal records search take?

Most Arizona searches finish within 24 hours or less. Afterward, you view the results in your secure online account.

How much does an Arizona criminal background check cost?

Our Arizona criminal records search costs $20.00 plus a $7.00 repository fee. That makes $27.00 per search, with no setup or monthly fees for card customers.

How far back does an Arizona criminal background check go?

Arizona sets no state time limit. However, the federal FCRA bars most non-conviction records older than seven years.

By contrast, convictions can appear regardless of age.

Do sealed Arizona records appear on a background check?

Usually not. Since December 31, 2022, A.R.S. § 13-911 lets courts seal eligible arrests and convictions.

Also, the court’s public case search excludes sealed cases. Applicants may deny sealed records on most job applications.
