County Criminal Court Search
County Criminal Court Search Fees by State
Some county courts charge an access fee before a researcher may pull criminal case records. BCS Background Screening LLC passes every one of those court fees through at cost, with no markup and no surprise line items.

Court fee schedule revised September 2026. Courts may change fees at any time without notice.
What Are County Criminal Court Search Fees?
A county criminal court search fee is money the court charges to let a researcher look at its criminal case index.
Court clerks set these fees locally, and state administrative offices approve them. Moreover, the amounts differ sharply from one courthouse to the next. Utah district courts charge ten cents per name, while most New York counties charge $98.00. BCS Background Screening LLC never sets, keeps or marks up these amounts.
Screening buyers often call them court access fees, pass-through fees or courthouse research fees. All four terms describe the same charge. You pay it only when the court that holds the record demands it.
The court sets the fee
Each clerk of court publishes its own access fee. Consequently, two neighboring counties often charge different amounts.
Charged per name searched
The fee applies to every name you submit. Therefore aliases, maiden names and former names each carry their own charge.
Billed at cost, never marked up
BCS Background Screening LLC forwards the exact amount the court charges. You see it as a separate line on your invoice.
Subject to change without notice
Courts revise fee schedules on their own timetable. Accordingly, the amount billed is the amount in force on your search date.
How Your Total County Search Cost Is Calculated
Your invoice combines two amounts: the BCS research fee and the court access fee.
The BCS Background Screening LLC fee for a county criminal court search is $18 per county, per name. In addition, the court fee applies only when that specific court charges one. The three examples below show how the math works in practice.
Counties that charge no access fee cost $18.00 per name. That covers the large majority of United States courts.
Five Rules That Govern Court Access Fees
Understand these rules before you budget a county criminal search program.
One fee per name
Courts charge for the search, not the result. Each name you submit triggers its own fee.
Aliases multiply the cost
Every alias, maiden name or prior legal name counts separately. Budget for two names on many applicants.
Clear results still cost
The clerk performs the work either way. Therefore a no-record result carries the same fee.
Fees change without warning
Courts publish new schedules whenever they choose. We bill the rate in force on the search date.
Most counties charge nothing
Only 878 courts nationwide appear on this list. The rest release records at no cost.

No court on this fee schedule matches that search. That usually means the county charges no access fee, so your cost is the $18.00 search fee alone.
My County Is Not on the List
Good news: that court charges no access fee today.
Most of the roughly 3,100 counties in the United States release criminal case records for free. Consequently, your total cost for those searches stays at $18.00 per name.
Occasionally a court adopts a new fee between updates to this page. In that case, BCS Background Screening LLC bills the amount the court charged and shows it separately on your invoice.
What the Fee Does Not Cover
A court access fee buys record access, nothing more.
- Sealed, expunged and juvenile records stay out of reach at any price.
- Traffic infractions fall outside the standard criminal scope.
- Federal cases live in a separate system and need a federal criminal search.
- Identity verification comes from the SSN trace included with your package.
- Reporting limits still apply, regardless of what the court releases.
Court Fees, Compliance and Who Pays
Court access fees are a cost question, yet they carry a compliance question too.
Some states bar charging the applicant
Several states prohibit employers from passing screening costs to a job applicant. Therefore you should confirm the rule in every state where you hire.
Our background screening laws by state library explains each statute, the agency that enforces it, and what employers must do.
FCRA duties do not change with the fee
A paid court search carries the same obligations as a free one. You still need a standalone disclosure, written authorization and a pre-adverse action notice.
Meanwhile, every BCS Background Screening LLC account includes an optional Multiple Authentication Factor (MAF) login for added security.
Budget by hiring footprint, not by headcount
Fee exposure follows geography. For instance, fifty hires in Kansas cost $150.00 in court fees, while fifty hires in New York City cost $4,900.00.
Consequently, smart programs forecast court fees by the counties they actually search.
County Criminal Court Search Fee FAQs
Answers to the questions employers ask most about court access fees.
What is a county criminal court search fee?
A county criminal court search fee is an access charge set by the court itself.
The clerk charges it before releasing criminal case records to a researcher.
BCS Background Screening LLC collects that amount and forwards it to the court without a markup.
How much does a county criminal court search cost in total?
The BCS Background Screening LLC research fee is $18 per county, per name.
Furthermore, you pay the court access fee only when the court charges one.
Therefore a search in Sedgwick County, Kansas costs $18 plus $3.00, or $21.00 total.
Do all counties charge a court access fee?
No. Most United States counties release criminal court records at no charge.
This page lists the 878 courts that currently do charge a fee.
Consequently, if your county is absent from the list, you pay the $18 search fee alone.
Is the fee charged per name or per case found?
Courts charge the fee per name searched, not per record found.
As a result, a clear search still carries the court fee.
The court performs the work whether or not it locates a case.
Do aliases and maiden names cost extra?
Yes. Each alias, maiden name or former name counts as a separate name.
The court charges its access fee again for every additional name.
However, running those names matters, because records file under the name used at the time of arrest.
Why does New York cost so much more than other states?
New York routes most county criminal research through the statewide OCA system.
That system carries a high per-name access charge, which nearly every New York county passes along.
Meanwhile, Dutchess, Putnam, Rensselaer and Rockland counties charge a lower $20.00 fee.
How often do court fees change?
Courts adjust their access fees whenever their fee schedules change.
They rarely give advance notice to consumer reporting agencies.
Accordingly, BCS Background Screening LLC reviews this schedule regularly and bills the amount the court charges on the search date.
Are court access fees refundable if the search comes back clear?
No. The court keeps its access fee once the clerk runs the search.
A clear result still consumes court staff time and system access.
Nevertheless, a clear county search remains the strongest evidence of a clean record in that jurisdiction.

Court fees may change at any time as per court notice. The amounts shown reflect the fee schedule in force as of September 2026 and apply per name searched. Additional names, aliases and maiden names each carry a separate court fee. BCS Background Screening LLC collects court access fees on behalf of the courts and adds no markup.
